The Castle of Otranto 1764: the first Gothic novel

“Heaven mocks the short-sighted views of man.”
― Horace Walpole, The Castle of Otranto

Mention the word gothic and the first thing that comes to my mind is castles. Castles swiftly followed by churches, ornate Victorian architecture, gargoyles, Vampires, tragedy and so much more.

The Gothic revival in architecture was accompanied by the writing of classic fiction, much of it through the Victorian era, but the first was The Castle of Oranto, A Gothic Story by Horace Walpole.
